On-Site and Off-Site Degaussing
Degaussing is a process where hard drives and tapes are exposed to a powerful alternating magnetic field, which renders the erased information unrecoverable. In fact, degaussing is the preferred method of sanitization by the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency for preventing data recovery.
